Meet Judge Beach
Judge Beach was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised by a working-class family in Detroit. His mother was a secretary and his father worked in a machine shop. His father taught Charlie how to work with his hands which he continues to this day as a skilled wood worker. His mother taught him compassion, empathy, and the will to overcome. Charlie attended Michigan State University and DePaul College of Law and was the first in his family to become a lawyer.
Judge Beach, prior to becoming a judge, was a well-known and respected attorney with a passion for justice and more than 21 years of experience in criminal felony and misdemeanor cases. He is an accomplished author, keynote speaker, and dedicated teacher who is admired by his peers for his unique ability to explain complex issues in simple and direct terms. In private practice he approached each case with honesty and openness, a method he still employs today as a judge.
While an attorney Charles expertly handled thousands of cases and hundreds of trials. He authored "Traffic Court Practice and Procedure" for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education. His diverse litigation experience also spans real estate, commercial, appellate law, and Article III of the United States Constitution.
Charles was a frequent lecturer at the Chicago Police Academy and devoted significant time and energy to his pro-bono projects. He created a program to assist people exiting prison regain their driving privileges, counseled indigent groups on their legal rights, and served as a member of the Women's Criminal Defense Bar and the Trans Life Advisory Board (TLAB). As a past President of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Co-Founder of the Chicago Bar Association Pro-Bono Statutory Summary Suspension Program, Charles is deeply devoted to the Constitution and upholding the rule of law. He has been elected chair of Chicago Bar Association Traffic Law Committee over five times.
Judge Beach was appointed to the bench in 2017 and was elected an Associate Judge by his peers in 2018. While on the bench he has served in leadership roles such as Deputy Supervising Judge of the Traffic Division and Chair of the DUI and Traffic Law Committee. He is a frequent writer and lecturer on the law to his fellow judges. Judge Beach sits on the Board of Managers for the Chicago Bar Association and the Illinois Judges Association.
Judge Beach was and remains involved with his community. He served as President of his neighborhood non profit group, Hamlin Park Neighbors. In addition to his investment in his own community, Charles was also on the Board of Lathrop Community Partners, a group tasked by the CHA to guide and consult on the redevelopment of Julia C. Lathrop Homes. Judge Beach also serves on the Chicago Police Department’s 19th Dist. Advisory Council as a Beat Facilitator for his neighborhood.
Judge Beach lives in Hamlin Park with his wife of 23 years, Virginia and three boys (Gus, Max and Ben) and their dog Scout. Charlie endeavors to instill in his sons the importance of honesty, respect and the life lessons his mother and father taught him.
